Data shows Katy ISD students are outperforming national peers in elementary reading, math

Assessment data shows Katy ISD elementary students are doing better than the national average in reading and math.

In a nutshell: At a March 30 meeting, Katy ISD officials shared an update on the first-year rollout for the Northwest Evaluation Association for measures of academic progress, or NWEA MAP, assessments. The test is given during the beginning, middle and end of the school year, officials said.

How it works: The roughly 40-question test is “adaptive,” with students receiving more difficult questions until one is answered incorrectly, which identifies the “just-right level” for the student based on their results.

By the numbers: Median percentiles from achievement results show Katy ISD kindergarten through fifth-grade students collectively did better than the nationwide average of 50% in reading and math during 2025 assessments.

Going forward: Kindergarten students will start taking the beginning-of-year assessments next year, officials said.

Meet The Candidates
Q&A: See the 2 candidates running for Fulshear City Council District 3

Two candidates are running for the open District 3 position on Fulshear City Council in the upcoming May 2 election.

The background: The opening comes after Fulshear City Council voted Sept. 16 to redistrict after a study showed the city had nearly doubled its population since the 2020 census, causing uneven representation among districts, Community Impact reported. The approval triggered a required election for all council members and the mayor's seat.

The details: The District 3 position is currently held by Christina Baron, who is not seeking reelection.

Here's what we asked them:

  • Why did you choose to run for Fulshear City Council?
  • What is your top priority if elected to represent the citizens of Fulshear?
  • What do you think is the most pressing issue for the city of Fulshear, and what will you do to address it?
  • How should the city prepare for and manage its growing population?
  • What would you do to prioritize economic development in the city?

Across The Region
DATA: Greater Houston-area school districts saw student homelessness rise from 2021-26; foster care trends uneven

Student homelessness increased across many Greater Houston-area school districts over the last five school years, while foster care numbers showed a more uneven pattern from district to district, according to Texas Education Agency data released March 6.

The overview: Community Impact reviewed TEA data for 28 Greater Houston-area school districts to compare the number of enrolled students identified as experiencing homelessness or living in foster care in 2025-26 versus 2021-22. In the foster care data, Fort Bend ISD and Aldine ISD had the highest counts in 2025-26.

In the homelessness data, Houston ISD stood above the rest of the districts shown, nearing 6,000 students in 2025-26. Other districts, including Alief ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Conroe ISD and Fort Bend ISD, all showed higher homeless student counts in 2025-26 than in 2021-22, while several others were flat or down.
