Bryan Planning and Zoning recommended designating nearly 12 acres of vacant land in North Bryan for future commercial development on Sept. 3.

What's happening: The rezoning of the land is guided by the city’s comprehensive plan, Blueprint 2040. Adopted in 2016, the official planning process began in fall 2025 and guides the decision-making for land use, development and economic growth, according to the city’s website.

The currently vacant 11.88 acres of land is in north Bryan, off North Earl Rudder Freeway East and Clarks Lane. Bryan City Planner Paige Jackson told the commission city staff agreed the land aligns with the comprehensive plan and will be surrounded by commercial properties. Jackson also said the property was originally on the thoroughfare plan, but has since been removed.

What happens next: The commission approved the ordinance unanimously for it to be sent to the next Bryan City Council meeting, Sept. 8.

These government offices and facilities in Bryan-College Station will be closed in observance of Labor Day, the annual holiday celebrating America’s workforce, on Sept. 7.

City of Bryan closures: According to the city of Bryan’s website, these facilities will be closed:

• Bryan Public Library System

• Bryan Animal Center

• Bryan Municipal Court

• Bryan Texas Utilities

• Coulter Airfield

• Neal Recreation Center

• Public Works Call Center

• Used Oil & Tire Recycling Center

City of College Station closures: The city of College Station website says most government offices will be closed, including:

• Larry J. Ringer Library

• Meyer Senior and Community Center

• Lincoln Recreation Center

• Gary Halter Nature Center

• Southwood Community Center

• College Station City Hall

Texas A&M University’s campus will be closed with no classes, according to its academic calendar.

Before you go: Most government offices and facilities will be closed, but some tourist destinations and facilities throughout Aggieland are open to the public. If residents need to make payments on certain utilities, there are options available.

Emergency services will also remain fully operational in both cities.

 Bryan and College Station ISDs entered the 2026-27 school year with fewer students projected than enrolled a year ago, but district leaders say the local enrollment picture is more nuanced than a simple decline.

Both districts have experienced enrollment changes in recent years as larger graduating classes have been replaced by smaller incoming classes, while demographic shifts and changing school choices continue to affect public school enrollment.

The overview: Community Impact analyzed Texas Education Agency enrollment data for both Bryan and College Station ISDs from school years 2019-20 through 2025-26, along with each district’s early enrollment numbers for 2026-27.

• BISD enrolled 1.13% more students in 2024-25 than the previous year

• CSISD enrolled 0.6% fewer students in 2023-24 versus 2022-23

• BISD 2026-27 enrollment: 15,381

• CSISD 2026-27 enrollment: 13,745

What's being done: Both districts closely monitor enrollment and attendance.

CSISD launched a transfer program for students outside of the district, and BISD launched a tuition-free virtual academy.

Why it matters: Changes in enrollment and attendance can affect district revenue and budgeting decisions in turn.

NY Street Dogs, an authentic New York-style hot dog restaurant, has opened in Bryan near College Station’s Northgate district.

What Street Dogs offers: The restaurant serves 100% Sabrett beef hot dogs with classic New York toppings, including sauerkraut, chili and bacon, as well as mac and cheese and other offerings.

Complimentary potato chips are included with every order and customers can choose from other menu items like Frito pies and soft pretzels.

The restaurant is open during dinner and late nights, with hours going into the early morning on Fridays and the weekend. Customers can also order online for individual orders and catering purchases.

Going forward: NY Street Dogs' opening comes after talks of expanding Northgate and plans for the area by the College Station City Council. With plans to add a parking garage and the recent relocation of Abu Omar Halal food truck, Northgate is expanding its restaurant and commuting options.
