Heading out in Austin for Halloween? Here's how to make a safety plan

Halloween weekend in Austin means costume parties, crowded bars and late nights. An Integral Care trainer says the safest celebrations start with a plan and a group of friends willing to look out for one another.

How to prepare: Before heading out, Leylee Morris of Integral Care recommended people know who they’re going with and share locations, decide how they’re getting home, pick an emergency contact and keep phones charged.

Downtown: APD expects 80,000-100,000 people downtown. East Sixth Street will close to vehicles between Brazos and Red River streets, and towing begins at 4 p.m. Saturday. No refusal is in effect.

Trick-or-treating: Parents should know their child’s route, carry a flashlight, stick to well-lit homes and inspect all candy before kids eat it, APD Cpl. Jose Mendez said.

Community resources: Morris recommended saving Integral Care’s 24/7 helpline, 512-472-HELP (4357). People should call 911 immediately if someone is unresponsive, unconscious or not breathing, she said.

East Austin transportation projects to watch this October

East Austin’s transportation projects are moving at different speeds this fall.

What’s happening: Along I-35, Woodland Avenue is permanently closed under the highway and closures near Riverside Drive will last through 2029.

Crews are also building drop shafts for 6.5 miles of drainage tunnels, with River Street and Levander Loop trail closures through 2028.

Work on the MoKan Trail’s Boggy Creek bridge is expected to wrap up this fall, and Airport Boulevard signal upgrades are complete.

Looking ahead: Capital Metro plans to begin double-tracking the Red Line near Plaza Saltillo in summer 2027, the same year the Texas Department of Transportation begins construction on I-35 downtown.

Roughly $30 million of advanced equipment will be available to help hardware companies move their initial prototypes into large-scale production.

Zooming in: The project is the first in Texas to be supported by ACMI, and is designed to serve a variety of area businesses and manufacturers, with flexible equipment to support partner companies from the defense, aerospace, medical and other sectors.
