League City becomes first Texas city to put Flock camera usage up to voters; results to be non-binding

Voters in League City will have an opportunity in November to weigh in on whether the League City Police Department should continue to use Flock automated license plate reader cameras.

However, the election results will be non-binding, meaning League City City Council will retain the authority to determine the city’s policy on Flock cameras, regardless of the outcome.

In a nutshell: Dozens of residents spoke either in favor of or against allowing residents to vote on the city’s Flock camera policy at League City City Council’s Aug. 11 meeting, before council members voted 6-1 to call a special election on Nov. 3 to hold a referendum on the issue.

How we got here: LCPD began using Flock cameras in December 2022, and has installed 55 Flock cameras in the city since. LCPD officials said the cameras have assisted in over 300 criminal investigations, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

Looking ahead: The special election will be held in conjunction with the general election on Nov. 3, according to city documents.

College of the Mainland to open public safety careers building

The College of the Mainland in Texas City will host a grand opening celebration for a new public safety careers building in September, according to an Aug. 11 news release from the college.

The details: The new facility building will house the college's fire technology, emergency medical services and criminal justice programs, according to the release. The building will feature a firing range, climbing tower and EMS simulation rooms.

The funding source: The building is part of COM’s COMPASS 2025 Facilities Master Plan and is funded by the college's $250 million bond approved by voters within the college's taxing district in 2023, according to the college's website.

Houston Airport System unveils renovated IAH Executive Club

The Executive Club at George Bush Intercontinental Airport has recently completed a full renovation, Houston Airport System officials announced in an Aug. 4 news release.

What's new: Operated by SSP America, the IAH Executive Club debuted a new modern look this summer featuring new furniture, fresh paint, updated decor and redesigned seating areas. Per the release, the lounge also features a central food and beverage area that includes buffet service and a dedicated bar.

Additional amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi, a meeting room and televisions, snacks, beverages and reading material.

Who it's for: Located on Level 2 of Terminal D near Gate D12, IAH's Executive Club serves qualifying international passengers flying with British Airways, Emirates and EVA Airlines. Qualified passengers will note access to the IAH Executive Club on their boarding pass, per the release.
