Conroe City Council to discuss Candy Cane Park holiday event, disannexation July 9

Conroe City Council could take action July 9 on several items, including a holiday event contract renewal, a disannexation ordinance and rules tied to council member attendance during executive sessions.

The details: The council is looking to repeal a resolution which requires council members to attend authorized executive sessions in person, as previously reported. The item was submitted by Mayor Duke Coon, according to the agenda.

Another item up for discussion is the annual renewal agreement with Southern Lighting for the Candy Cane Park Drive-Through Christmas Celebration. According to agenda documents, city staff is recommending approval of the first one-year renewal option with the company.

Southern Lighting would continue providing Christmas lights, decorations, character displays, staging, installation and post-event removal for the event. The renewal also includes several additions at no extra cost to the city, including perimeter lighting for the Activity Center, CK Ray Recreation Center and park administration buildings, another light tunnel, decorative elements and reconfigured display zones with new themed areas, according to agenda documents.

Willis barbershop Razor Republic officially opens its doors

Razor Republic officially welcomed customers with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 28. The shop is owned and operated by a 20-year veteran of the hair industry, Brittany Parker.

What they offer: Parker said that Razor Republic is open seven days a week and offers a wide variety of services inclusive of all hair types and styles. These services include, but are not limited to:

  • Beard trims and shaping

  • Straight razor shaves

  • Head shaves

  • Scissor cuts

  • Facial grooming

  • Waxing services

SHSU opens applications for new master’s in applied biomedical sciences

Sam Houston State University is now accepting applications for its new master’s program in applied biomedical sciences, per a July 7 news release. The inaugural cohort will begin this upcoming fall.

What you need to know: The new master’s program, which will be offered online, will include tracks in medical/healthcare artificial intelligence, healthcare technologies, regulatory affairs and clinical sciences, as previously reported. The application fee is waived for students who are applying for the fall cohort, per the news release. Interested students can apply through ApplyTexas, and the university will also be hosting virtual information sessions July 22 and July 30 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Some context: The new master’s program will also be connected to SHSU’s Institute for Medical Artificial Intelligence. The institute is working to advance education, research, innovation and the responsible use of AI in medicine and healthcare, per the news release.
