Elite Dermatology & Plastic Surgery will begin seeing patients at a new standalone building in Kingwood in late August, Senior Practice Manager Kim Ho confirmed Aug. 5.

What's new: Previously located at 4505 Kingwood Drive, Ste. 185, Kingwood, the new building will house a Fraxel laser, which is also available at the practice's locations in the Heights, Vintage Park and Fulshear. Ho noted the Kingwood location is also the only location to offer Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy, a non-surgical, outpatient treatment option for non-melanoma skin cancers. 

Quote of note: "We have long outgrown our previous Kingwood clinic, and this much larger facility will allow us to care for more patients each day while reducing wait times and improving access to appointments," Ho said in an email. "We look forward to welcoming both new and returning patients to our new home."

The Sweet Swirl: Officials with The Sweet Swirl hosted a grand opening celebration in Humble on Aug. 14, according to a post on the business’s Facebook page. The Sweet Swirl offers an assortment of sweet treats and snacks, including ice cream, slushies, frozen hot chocolate, floats, espresso and coffee, and milkshakes, per the website.

Houston rental property owners will now be required to provide operable air conditioning to renters.

What happened: During its Aug. 19 meeting, Houston City Council approved an ordinance that closes the loophole that used to allow property owners to use window screens as an exemption for providing air conditioning.

The new ordinance now requires A/C capable of maintaining an inside temperature 20 degrees lower than the outside temperature, or no higher than 80 degrees.

The debate: Council members Willie Davis and Twila Carter expressed concerns with the ordinance, saying that it could increase costs for residents. Davis said he is concerned it will lead to other issues for residents as well.

On the other hand, some council members spoke in support of the ordinance, with District C council member Joe Panzarella saying the ordinance is “asking for the bare minimum of livability in the city.”

Something to note: Enforcement will begin 90 days after Aug. 19.

The subway at George Bush Intercontinental Airport—designed by Disney engineers using the same technology used in Disneyland—recently celebrated 45 years of service, per an Aug. 3 news release from the Houston Airport System.

How it happened: The airport was expanding heavily in the 1970s, as was Disney’s linear induction motor technology for transportation across the Disneyland theme park. Per the release, the company was looking into expanding the use of its technologies at other facilities, which is when they set eyes on IAH.

Disney eventually put a successful bid in for the project in 1979, with construction ending and the subway opening in 1981. Per the release, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck attended the grand opening, marking the occasion with a Disney touch.

The bottom line: IAH saw 12.4 million international passengers in 2025, with the Disney transit system serving over 3.3 million passengers. Houston Airport System officials said the foundation of that travel around the terminals can be attributed to Disney’s technology and some "Disney magic."
