Plano’s Haywire embraces Texas cuisine, local vendors

The mission of Haywire is to “Inspire the true Texan in everyone,” Haywire Managing Partner Jamie Johnson said.

“We welcome anyone—from your boots to your stilettos,” Johnson said of the three-story restaurant located in Legacy West. “You could have a business or casual dinner or just meet for a cocktail.”

Haywire, a restaurant concept by Dallas-headquartered FB [Front Burner] Society, opened its Plano location in 2017.

On the menu: Haywire Chef Skyler Gauthier said the menu celebrates Texas cuisine through dishes inspired by the state’s diverse culinary influences, including barbecue, Mexican and German food.

“Our ethos, when it comes to food, is approachable yet unique,” Gauthier said. “To call yourself Texas cuisine is to really embrace all the different cultures that are embedded in Texas culture.”

The top-selling menu item, whether it be lunch or dinner, is the chicken fried steak. Other crowd pleasers are the 6-ounce petit filet, mini-elk tacos and steakhouse salad.

Plano voters oppose Dallas Stars venue taxes

Plano voters rejected a series of venue taxes that would have helped finance the proposed $1 billion arena for the Dallas Stars.

The details: The arena is part of a $3 billion mixed-use development proposed at the Willow Bend Mall site.

With all 90 precincts reporting, there were 56,061 votes, or 54.6%, against the venue taxes, while 46,658 ballots, or 45.4%, were cast in favor of the proposition.

City Manager Mark Israelson said city officials will need to reassess funding for the arena without voter approval of the venue taxes.

"Without authorization for these venue taxes, the proposed financing approach would need to be reassessed before City Council considers any actions related to the arena," Israelson said in a statement. "Our focus will be on providing them with a clear understanding of the financial implications and the options available moving forward."

One more thing: All election results are unofficial until canvassed.

Democrats declare victory in Texas governor, lieutenant governor races

Two Democratic state lawmakers declared victory in the races for Texas governor and lieutenant governor Nov. 3.

What's happening: Speaking at an Austin watch party, Gina Hinojosa told supporters that the "trust they placed in her was not a blank check." Vikki Goodwin pointed to changes she hoped to make as lieutenant governor and president of the Texas Senate.

"We are on a mission to fight back against the systemic destruction of our rights, our public education and our democracy," Goodwin said.

Both women are state representatives from Austin. Hinojosa is poised to become the state's first Latina governor, while Goodwin would become the first female lieutenant governor.

More context: Republican Gov. Greg Abbott conceded to Hinojosa earlier Nov. 3, while Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued a statement calling the election "fair."

"I love our state," Abbott said to his crowd of supporters in Austin. "It's been an honor to serve it. I know we are leaving Texas in far better shape than it's ever been."
