McKinney Economic Development Corp. appoints new senior VP

The McKinney Economic Development Corp. has appointed a new senior vice president to its leadership team, according to an Aug 26 news release.

The full story: MEDC officials have appointed Visit McKinney Executive Director Aaron Werner to the role, according to the release. Werner is expected to begin his new role Sept. 21 after four years of leading Visit McKinney, the city's convention and visitors bureau.

Werner’s experience in destination development, placemaking, partnership building and organizational leadership will bring “valuable continuity” to MEDC, the release states. In a statement, MEDC President and CEO Michael Kowski said Werner is “exactly the leader” the organization’s next chapter calls for.

Quote of note: “He knows this community, builds strong teams, and has worked alongside us for years,” Kowski said. “Adding a proven leader from within the McKinney family brings exceptional talent and continuity while preserving the collaborative, high-performing culture that makes this organization successful.”

Potbelly sets opening date for west McKinney restaurant

Potbelly is set to debut in west McKinney this September, a company news release states.

The details: The sandwich shop with over 465 locations offers a variety of toasted sandwiches as well as wraps, salads, soups, macaroni and cheese, milkshakes and more, according to the company's website. The McKinney restaurant is owned and operated by franchisees Barry and Remington Burke, a father-and-son duo that also has plans to bring a total of 15 shops to North and East Texas, the release states.

“West McKinney has such a strong sense of community and a lot of energy around its growth, making it a natural fit for Potbelly,” Remington Burke said in the release.

Q&A: Get to know 3 candidates for Texas Railroad Commissioner

Texas voters will choose from Republican Bo French, Libertarian Arthur DiBianca and Democrat Jon Rosenthal in this November's Texas Railroad Commission race.

The details: The winner of the race will be sworn in to replace incumbent Commissioner Jim Wright in January.

French beat Wright in a May Republican primary runoff, advancing to the general election. Rosenthal ran uncontested in the March Democratic primary, while DiBianca was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Did you know? The three-member railroad commission does not have any jurisdiction over the state's railroads—that authority was transferred to the Texas Department of Transportation and the federal government by 2005, according to the commission's website. Instead, the agency regulates Texas' oil and gas industries.

Looking ahead: Early voting in dozens of local and state races runs from Oct. 19-30, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
