A new Alvin ISD elementary school is scheduled to open for the 2027-28 school year as part of the district’s 2024 voter-approved bond program, following an update presented to the board of trustees at its Sept. 1 workshop.

Some context: Of the $380 million bond, nearly $225 million is allocated for new campus construction, including two elementary schools, a new junior high and a replacement campus for Walt Disney Elementary.

Diving in deeper: Construction on Elementary School No. 23, or Emmett Miller Elementary, began in fall 2025, and is currently undergoing mechanical work, interior framing, masonry, plumbing and additional site work. The school is expected to open for the 2027-28 school year and serve about 800 students, documents show.

A closer look: At Alvin High School, portions of the campus have been demolished, underground utility work is underway and the project is moving toward new construction. The project is designed to increase student capacity, expand classroom space and update career and technical education facilities, documents show.

The overview: Median housing prices in the Pearland-Friendswood-Manvel area decreased in August compared to the same month last year. Just one out of four ZIP codes saw an increase, with one ZIP code decreasing by nearly 10%.

Diving in deeper: The number of days homes sat on the market decreased in August 2026 compared to August 2025. All four ZIP codes saw a decrease, with one lowering by nearly 45%.

What else: The number of homes sold varied in August 2026 compared to August 2025. While two ZIP codes saw an increase, two saw a decrease.

One last thing: The area saw more homes sold between $200,000 and $399,000 in July compared to other price ranges. Most others were sold between $400,000 and $599,999.

The office of Gov. Greg Abbott announced a $138 billion investment in Texas transportation infrastructure, including projects in the Greater Houston region, according to an Aug. 27 news release from the Texas Department of Transportation.

The Unified Transportation Program for 2026 was approved during an August meeting of the Texas Transportation Commission.

The breakdown: The program’s funding is divided into two portions, $95 billion for transportation projects across the state, and $43 billion which is reserved for routine maintenance and development. The total of $138 billion is intended to be spent on projects and maintenance over the next 10 years, according to the news release.

• The North Houston Highway Improvement Project continues to be a priority for the Houston District, with several projects planned within the first four years of the UTP.
