The Roanoke City Council voted to add guidelines and restrictions on electric bicycles and electric scooters on city streets.

What happened? During the July 14 meeting, the council voted unanimously to amend the city code of ordinances by adding a chapter on electronic mobility vehicles.

Mayor Carl E. “Scooter” Gierisch said many neighboring towns and cities have addressed issues that have arisen from the influx of e-bicycles and e-scooters on city streets and sidewalks.

“I’m a firm believer we need to get some rules and regulations established. If certain parts of the rules and regulations are maybe too restrictive, you come back and amend that,” Gierisch said.

Zooming in: If any of the new conditions are not followed, the ordinance outlines actionable consequences.

On the first or second offense, a fine could be assessed up to $500. On the third and subsequent offense within 12 months, the vehicle will be impounded.

Texas Leather Interiors is opening its seventh store in Texas in the Alliance area of Fort Worth.

The overview: The furniture store will be in the North City mixed-use development and is listed as coming soon on its website. Texas Leather Interiors sells handcrafted, customizable sofas, sectionals, chairs, recliners and living room sets.

A spokesperson with the company said a set opening date has not been determined.

The project has dirt work completed and a "coming soon" sign is facing Riva Way. Permits for plumbing and electrical work have been issued by the city of Fort Worth, according to its website.

Other locations for Texas Leather Interiors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area include Plano and Dallas.

Gov. Greg Abbott named Robert S. Howden, one of his senior advisers and his office's legislative director, as Texas' 116th secretary of state effective July 18. Howden will succeed Secretary of State Jane Nelson, who resigned effective July 17 more than three years after she took office.

As the state's chief elections officer, Howden will be responsible for overseeing the application of Texas election laws and assisting local election officials. The secretary of state's office also manages business records, government rules and regulations, and other official duties.

Following Abbott's appointment, Howden must be confirmed for the position by at least two-thirds of the Texas Senate. The state Legislature's next regular session will begin in January.
