Manvel residents will have an opportunity to weigh in on whether the city’s Police Department should continue using Flock Safety automated license plate reader cameras during City Council’s Sept. 8 meeting.

What residents need to know: Flock cameras are manufactured by Flock Safety and capture images of vehicle license plates. That data can then be searched and shared between law enforcement agencies. Mayor Dan Davis raised concerns about the company in an Aug. 28 social media post, saying his focus is not on the Manvel Police Department or license plate reader technology, but on how the company uses and shares data.

Looking ahead: Manvel City Council is scheduled to consider the city’s contract with Flock Safety and hear public comment at 5 p.m. Sept. 8 at Manvel City Hall, located at 20031 Hwy. 6, Manvel.

Events by Lindsay soft-opened a Pearland storefront in early September, owner Lindsay Benoit confirmed.

What’s in a name: The bakery offers a variety of sweets, including cupcakes, cake balls and pops, macarons, tiramisu cheesecake and bread pudding. Savory offerings include blackened shrimp Alfredo and pork belly with mashed potatoes. The space also features a seasonal boutique offering home décor and gifts, Benoit said.

What they offer: The Houston-based restaurant offers a variety of New Orleans-inspired dishes, including chicken, shrimp, boudin, collard greens and dirty rice, as well as desserts, including peach cobbler and sweet potato pie.

The Harris County Commissioners Court is slated to discuss the proposed budget and tax rates for the upcoming fiscal year during a special meeting Sept. 8.

At a glance: Commissioners are expected to make amendments to the proposed $3.096 billion budget, which was presented to the court Aug. 18. The court will also review the proposed tax rates and potentially set them as the county faces a $181 million shortfall.

The county’s Office of Management and Budget has proposed a tax rate of about $0.67 per $100 of property valuation, a 7.6% increase from last year, according to an agenda document. 

Also on the agenda: Commissioners will consider a 30% raise for County Treasurer Carla Wyatt. An all-citizen committee recommended increasing her pay to $181,411 annually during a meeting Aug. 20. The consideration comes as the court is planning to seek legislative approval to eliminate the treasurer's office permanently.
