Comal ISD board of trustees select mascot for Major Middle School

The Comal ISD board of trustees unanimously approved a mascot for Dr. Jerry S. Major Middle School during a regular meeting June 25.

The mascot selected by trustees was the Lions.

How we got here: The naming nomination process began in July 2025. In March, trustees approved the name of the school and the mascot selection process began in May, according to the June 25 meeting presentation.

The nomination process, which was open May 15-29, was public and promoted through social media, newsletters and emails. District staff also reached out to the Mayfair, Oak Creek and Freiheit Elementary communities, which are the feeder elementary schools for the new middle school. The district received 131 nominations. Out of those, the top three nominations were Lions, Pumas and Lynx, according to the presentation.

More details: The school's construction is anticipated to be completed in summer 2027, CISD Chief Operations Officer Mark Stahl said.

La Belle Vie to be converted into event hall in downtown New Braunfels

La Belle Vie, a locally owned home goods and antique shop, is going to be converted into a new event hall for downtown bar Cowboys and Cadillacs.

Some details: La Belle Vie is owned by Shaina Corzine, who said it was time to “let the space move forward with a greater need and demand.”

Corzine also owns Red Stag and Luxe Design Studio, which will continue providing custom furniture and design services for residential and commercial needs, Corzine said in an email to Community Impact.

As owner of the building in which those businesses reside, Corzine said Cowboys and Cadillacs is expanding their needs, which led to her decision to reallocate the space.

“It will serve as a weather back up for private parties booked on the rooftop," Corzine said in the email.

The hall will be available to rent for special events and private parties.

Texas moves forward with state-centered social studies curriculum, trimming world history and diversity lessons

The State Board of Education is nearing the finish line in its massive rewrite of what Texas public school students will learn about world and state history.

The details: The curriculum overhaul would shift the focus in social studies classes to a Texas-centered approach, deemphasizing lessons about world cultures and injecting more content about Christianity’s role in the founding of the United States.

Some educators and students have expressed concerns that the proposal lacks significant teachings about civil rights history, Japanese internment in the 1940s and people of color’s contributions to the nation. Meanwhile, Republican board members have pushed back, saying that the rewrite is necessary to teach students about American exceptionalism and Texas heritage in an attempt to undo what they called “a watering-down of American history.”

What's happening: The board has spent the bulk of its meetings this week making amendments to a 143-page social studies proposal, which includes hundreds of standards that students would be expected to learn each year. If adopted June 26, the new requirements would take effect in 2030.
