Q&A: Meet the candidates for Texas House of Representatives District 132

Two candidates are running for Texas House of Representatives District 132 in the Nov. 3 election, challenger Sara McGee and Mike Schofield who is seeking reelection.

What you need to know: Early voting begins Oct. 19 and runs through Oct. 30, according to the Texas Secretary of State's website. Election day is Nov. 3 and polls are open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Registered voters can cast their ballot at any polling location during early voting. However, on election day, voters must vote at their designated voting precincts.

Houston Premium Outlets expands retail lineup with designer store, bar

The Houston Premium Outlets announced the upcoming openings of Michael Kors Mens and Ales & Wines in a Aug. 24 release. Both stores have plans to open this summer. The Houston Premium Outlets recently opened Under Amour Factory House.

The details: Located near Kate Spade New York, Michael Kors Mens offers accessories, footwear, watches, jewelry, men’s ready-to-wear, wearable technology, eyewear and a full line of fragrance products, the release said. The second opening includes Ales & Wine and is located in the food court. The establishment offers chilled wines, cold beers, handcrafted micheladas and margaritas.

In case you missed it: On July 31, the Houston Premium Outlets opened Under Amour Factory House, an athletic apparel store located near Helzberg Diamonds.

Will Clayton Parkway lane closures planned near IAH this week

Motorists traveling to and from George Bush Intercontinental Airport this week should allow extra travel time due to nearby road construction, Houston Airport System officials announced in an Aug. 24 news release.

What you need to know: Beginning with prep work Aug. 24, HAS will repair concrete in the westbound lanes of Will Clayton Parkway between Kenswick Drive and Lee Road. Per the release, major demolition and concrete work will occur Aug. 25-28.

Officials noted motorists should anticipate lane closures, especially overnight, when two of three lanes will be closed for construction. Motorists can take John F. Kennedy Boulevard as an alternate route during construction. 

Stay tuned: All three lanes are expected to reopen by the afternoon of Aug. 28, per the release.

Texas Department of Insurance must work to reduce home insurance costs, Gov. Abbott says

The Texas Department of Insurance must take action to promote competition and “prohibit excessive or unfairly discriminatory rate setting" in the state's homeowners insurance market, Gov. Greg Abbott said Aug. 24.

The background: Texans are paying the fourth-highest home insurance premiums in the nation, Community Impact previously reported. State data shows that the average Texas home insurance premium nearly doubled from $1,791 in 2016 to $3,506 in 2025.

The details: Abbott asked the TDI to prohibit insurers from using the age of a home and homeowners' personal data when setting rates; create a task force targeting insurance fraud; study the impact of inflated insurance claims; and require insurers to consider a homeowner's participation in a roof fortification program when writing policies.

Another perspective: "Under Greg Abbott, Texas has been one of the most expensive states in the country to own and maintain a home," Gina Hinojosa, the Democratic candidate for Texas governor, said in a statement. "If Abbott really wanted to lower costs, he would have done it in the last 12 years."
