LCISD's Roosevelt Nivens named National Superintendent of the Year

Lamar Consolidated ISD Superintendent Roosevelt Nivens was named the National Superintendent of the Year on Feb. 12, marking the first Texas nominee to win the national award in 25 years, officials announced in a Feb. 12 news release.

The background: Nivens, who has served at LCISD since 2021, was nominated for The School Superintendents Association's national award by the Texas Association of School Administrators in November, following his award as Region 4 Superintendent of the Year.

The details: Nivens, who is also the TASA's president-elect, was one of four national finalists, including superintendents from Kentucky, Maine and Maryland, per the release.

The final nominees were judged on several criteria, including leadership for learning, communication, professionalism and community involvement.

What's next: A $10,000 scholarship will be presented in Nivens' name to the high school he graduated from, per the release.

FS8 to bring low-impact training to Katy

FS8, an international exercise studio, is set to open its doors in Morton Ranch in Katy.

In a nutshell: The exercise studio offers low-impact training workouts combining Pilates, yoga, and toning exercises with a holistic approach designed to support mental wellness, according to its website.

Zooming out: The FS8 brand, which is under the same parent company as F45 Training, has several locations throughout the Greater Houston area including The Woodlands and Montrose as well as another coming to Webster, per its website.

Houston Association of Realtors names René Galvan president, CEO

The Houston Association of Realtors has named René Galvan as its new president and CEO, the first leadership change in more than three decades after longtime executive Bob Hale retired Jan. 31, according to a Feb. 2 news release.

What we know: Galvan has been part of HAR’s leadership team since 1996 and served as executive vice president since 1998, per the release. HAR officials said he worked alongside Hale early in his career to help shape the original concept for HAR.com, which launched in 1997 and has since expanded statewide.

In the release, Galvan said his focus will be strengthening the services and tools the association’s roughly 50,000 members use “in this rapidly changing real estate environment.”

HAR said Hale—who served as president and CEO for 37 years—retired after 53 years with the association. The board honored him with the title of CEO emeritus, and Hale said he was confident the organization is “in excellent hands” with Galvan leading it.

Check this out: Montgomery County Precinct 2 residents will have an opportunity to dispose of their heavy trash March 7-8 during Commissioner Charlie Riley’s Heavy Trash Clean Up Day, according to a Feb. 4 Facebook post.

From 8 a.m.-5 p.m. March 7 and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. March 8, residents can bring their heavy trash to 31245 Friendship Drive, Magnolia. Accepted items include batteries, tires and electronics, among others. 

In other news: The Houston Texans are setting up shop in Bridgeland.

The NFL franchise is collaborating with Harris County Precincts 3 and 4 and Howard Hughes Holdings to invest $83 million into a new “Toro District” in Cypress, which will include a new Texans headquarters and training facilities. Harris County commissioners approved the public-private partnership Feb. 12 following a closed-session meeting.

Also of note: A new La La Land Cafe is expected to open in Katy's Meadows Marketplace later this year.
