Reported crime in Bryan fell 5.8% during the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, according to the Bryan Police Department.

Breaking it down: Several major offense categories also declined through July, including murder decreasing by 50% and robbery down by more than 35%.

How we got here: The decline comes as the city said Bryan’s population has increased. The city grew from 69,851 residents in 2005 to 92,664 in 2025, an increase of nearly 33%.

Over the same period, the Bryan Police Department reported it grew from 160 employees to 196, which is a 22.5% increase.

One more thing: “We are encouraged by the progress, but we are not satisfied by it,” Police Chief Dean Swartzlander said. “Crime trends can change quickly, and violent crime will always receive our full attention.”

The department said it will continue monitoring crime trends and adjusting its response as needed.

What’s next: TxDOT will be maintaining two open main lanes in each direction during construction. A majority of the work will be on the main lanes, along with the construction of temporary pavement and retaining walls.

The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents is warning that micromobility devices could be banned from campus if safety issues persist. During a board meeting, data revealed that campus crashes involving these devices increased 37% from 2024 to 2025. Additionally, auto-pedestrian incidents in Bryan-College Station rose by 17% over the same period.

The big picture: To address these safety concerns, the university has focused on several initiatives, including:

• Adding separated paths to keep micromobility devices out of roadways

• Launching new registration software to identify devices and communicate with owners

• Emphasizing helmet use, removing earbuds and paying attention through education campaigns

• Increasing enforcement, with University Police issuing 16% more moving violations involving micromobility devices in 2025

• Impounding unregistered devices and tagging vehicles that exceed campus restrictions

What's next: The board did not take action to ban the devices at this time, but Regent John Bellinger warned they could be banned in a year if the issue is not fixed.

Bryan voters will decide among incumbent Ray Arrington and challengers Chrissy Ransome and Jeanette Stewart Moseley on Nov. 3 in the race for District 2.
