Health Care Guide: 6 health care updates from local hospitals

Major hospital systems in the Houston area have made technological advancements, unveiled plans for expansions and completed enhancements over the last year.

Check out six recent updates from local hospitals that serve the Heights, River Oaks and Montrose areas.

Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital: Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital began a $7.3 million investment to renovate and modernize its Family Birthing Unit. This major project supports the hospital’s significant growth in delivery volumes and provides an enhanced, state-of-the-art experience for growing families in the community.

River Oaks Hospital & Clinics: In late 2025, the River Oaks Hospital & Clinics became a home base for Provecta Research Network, a clinical research organization based in Houston. The company focuses on comprehensive drug studies and strong trial infrastructure across multiple studies.

Kindred Hospital Houston: Kindred Hospital Houston Medical Center, which specializes in offering long-term acute care and rehabilitation for medically complex patients, expanded its renal care services with the addition of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, considered ideal for patients in critical condition.

Fortune Eight opens its doors on Washington Avenue

The Chinese cuisine restaurant celebrated its grand opening on June 1 in the Houston area, Owner Allen Lin confirmed.

In their own words: Cooked to order and crafted with real ingredients, Fortune Eight’s wok-fired entrees range from Kung Pao Chicken and Walnut Shrimp to featured menu items like its Baby Bok Choy and Shitake.

“We mainly focus on smaller menu items with an emphasis on quality,” Lin told Community Impact. “Really just serving up those classic foods that can be found on our website and doing the basics well.”

The menu also includes appetizers such as spring rolls, spicy wontons and fortune fries. Milk, fruit and Thai teas are also available for purchase.

METRO aims to streamline services ahead of increased travel demand for the FIFA World Cup

The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County began implementing service enhancements June 7 aimed to improve reliability and support increased demand during the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is set to take over Houston in less than a week.

What's changing: The changes are set to increase frequency and extend operating hours along key transit corridors and major activity centers, according to a June 5 news release. The service changes, which will be ongoing through July 11, include increasing frequency across the Red, Green and Purple METRORail lines, some new park and ride options and bus route upgrades.

Here are some key changes for residents to be aware of:

  • Red Line: extending six-minute frequency to weekends and until 9 p.m. on weekdays and extending daily hours of operation
  • During the World Cup, Park & Ride routes will operate seven days a week until midnight; fares range from $2 to $4.50 directly to downtown.

Several bus routes in local neighborhoods across Houston will also receive additional service, which includes increasing late-night hours and daily frequency.

PREVIEW: Harris County commissioners to discuss flood mitigation projects, new infrastructure policies

Harris County commissioners are set to discuss the creation of a new committee aimed at improving communication and efficiency across county departments June 11, alongside the creation of a chief infrastructure officer position for the county.

The breakdown: Harris County precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey and Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia will also put forth a plan to create an Infrastructure Coordination and Performance Committee that will "streamline departmental execution to support effective and timely implementation of and progress on Commissioners Court’s infrastructure-related priorities."

What else? Commissioners are also set to continue discussion on a plan being presented by the Harris County Flood Control District to move forward on several flood mitigation projects funded by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development before losing access to the funding.
