Summerwood Elementary officials unveil 'Sports All-Star'-themed playground

Humble ISD officials celebrated an April 30 opening of Summerwood Elementary School’s new “Sports All-Star”-themed playground, according to a May 1 post on the district’s Facebook page.

The details: According to an April 17 news release, the playground is designed for children ages 5-12 and includes the following features:

  • 16-foot climbing tower
  • Sensory panels
  • Slides
  • Swings
  • Spinners

The playground was designed and installed by Lone Star Recreation of Texas, per the release.

Some context: The new playground is part of the district’s ongoing campus playground revitalization initiative, which was included in the district's $775 million bond package approved by voters in 2022. Officials noted HISD playgrounds are open to the public when school is not in session.

The framework: Since launching his website “Reduce Flooding - NOW!” nearly nine years ago, Rehak has become synonymous with flood mitigation efforts in Kingwood. Posting on his website nearly every day, Rehak said he has published the equivalent of more than 25 average-length novels.

Community Impact sat down with Rehak to learn more about the writer behind the blog and the inspiration that fuels his passion for flood mitigation.

Quote of note: “Nothing has really changed in the watershed and I’m not going to stop until it does,” Rehak said. “Most people don't have a clue about the power of moving water; I have a healthy respect for it.”

Brett Ligon to lead Texas Senate District 4 through 2026, unofficial results show

Republican candidate Brett Ligon will be taking the vacant Texas Senate District 4 seat, as unofficial results show him with 75% of the votes, over opposing Democratic candidate Ron Angeletti.

  • Ligon (R): 26,068 votes, or 75.06%

  • Angeletti (D): 8,662 votes, or 24.94%

Some context: Incumbent Brandon Creighton chose to vacate the seat after being named chancellor and CEO of the Texas Tech University System.

DATA: Students in special education programs rise at Greater Houston-area school districts in 2025-26

Friendswood and Alief ISDs had the largest percentages of students with dyslexia and autism across the Greater Houston area, according to Texas Education Agency data released March 13 and April 9.

The overview: Community Impact analyzed 30 local school districts across the Greater Houston region to determine which schools have the most students enrolled in special education programs.

According to the data, the districts with the largest total of students receiving special education services in 2025-26 are:

  • Houston ISD with 21,430 students
  • Katy ISD with 18,443 students
  • Cy-Fair ISD with 17,584 students
  • Fort Bend ISD with 12,688 students
  • Conroe ISD with 11,239 students

Breaking it down: Dyslexia and autism are the most common disorders measured in students in the state and in Regions 4 and 6—which covers most of the Greater Houston area and beyond—according to TEA data released March 13 and April 9. In Regions 4 and 6, 38,172 students with autism and 76,003 with dyslexia were enrolled during the 2025-26 school year.
