New retail at Dallas Parkway, Frontier Parkway remains under review

Plans for new retail and restaurant space at the intersection of Dallas Parkway and Frontier Parkway remain on hold due to questions from Prosper Planning and Zoning commissioners about the project’s components and long-term vision.

What you need to know: The commission tabled the preliminary site plan at its Jan. 20 meeting for the second time to allow the applicant more time to incorporate the commission’s feedback. The 34.6-acre property is currently planned to include a mix of restaurants and retail, including a pharmacy with a drive-thru, smaller retail and restaurant buildings and a larger retail space of over 100,000 square feet, according to town documents.

Some context: Commissioners first tabled the proposal at their Dec. 16 meeting to allow the applicant to incorporate commissioner feedback into an updated site plan. The applicant made no changes to the site plan and submitted a “market analysis" instead.

What they’re saying: Several commissioners expressed concerns about the lack of enforceable requirements with project phasing, limited mixed-use components and whether the development reflects the “gateway” vision for Prosper.

Prosper ISD to remain closed Thursday

Prosper ISD will remain closed Thursday, Jan. 29 because of hazardous road conditions, according to a Jan. 28 announcement.

The details: The district has been closed Jan. 26-28 because of Winter Storm Fern, which brought snow, sleet and ice to the Dallas-Fort Worth area last weekend.

“We have had dozens of facilities team members working every day to clear sidewalks, doorways, driveways, and parking lots across all campuses,” the post stated. “However, the continued cold temperatures have simply not allowed the ice and snow to melt enough for safe passage.”

Winter storm creates severe need for blood donations in North Texas

Severe winter weather has created a significant need for blood donations after forcing many donor centers and blood drives to close for several days.

The big picture: The national blood supply remains at critically low levels, a shortage worsened by the effects of severe winter weather across the country, according to a news release from the American Red Cross. In North Texas, Carter BloodCare closed all donor centers and mobile blood drives for four days, from Jan. 24-27, due to the weather and hazardous travel conditions.

“That put us down about 4,000 units of blood and blood components that would be for the local supply,” said James Black, Carter BloodCare’s senior public relations specialist.

Next steps: All blood types are critically needed, Black said, but particularly universal blood type O negative and platelet donations. Individuals who are eligible to donate can find their closest donor center and make an appointment online, although Black said walk-ins are also welcome.

Q&A: Get to know the Republican primary candidates for Texas lieutenant governor

Four Republican candidates are running for Texas lieutenant governor—the second-in-command to the governor—in the upcoming March 3 primary election.

The big picture: Republican incumbent Dan Patrick is seeking a fourth term in the lieutenant governor's office. The lieutenant governor leads the Texas Senate and can exercise the powers of the governor if the governor dies, resigns, is removed from office or is absent from the state, according to the Texas State Historical Association.

Patrick is challenged by three Republican candidates: Timothy Mabry, Perla Muñoz Hopkins and Esala Wueschner. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes in the Republican primary, a runoff election will be held between the two top vote-getters May 26.

Stay tuned: The winning Republican candidate will face the winner of the Democratic nomination in November. The winner of that election will be sworn in for a four-year term in January 2027.
