The Dwelling church breaks ground on 6.3-acre project in New Caney

On June 8, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the “Park Phase” of a 6.3-acre project for The Dwelling church, a spokesperson for the church confirmed via email June 10.

The details: According to the email, features of the Park Phase will include:

  • Sodded community sports fields
  • A covered pavilion with restrooms
  • A driveway and parking areas
  • Retention and detention areas

Going forward: Future phases of construction are planned to include a playground and a new ministry facility for community events and worship.

New Caney ISD adds special education staff to keep up with student program growth

After New Caney ISD’s special education student population grew by about 1,800 students over the last five school years, district officials opted to add at least 75 new program staff members before the start of the 2026-27 school year.

What’s happening? A presentation on NCISD’s special education department was given June 15, during the district’s board of trustees’ regular monthly meeting. According to the presentation, students in NCISD’s special education program:

  • Grew by 547 students or 18.5% year over year (2024-25 to 2025-26)
  • Rose from 1,811 students or 106.9% over the last five school years (2021-22 to 2025-26)

Looking ahead: Ahead of the 2026-27 school year, which begins for students Aug. 6, NCISD officials have hired additional employees for the special education department, according to the June 15 presentation. New special education positions include:
  • 20 paraprofessionals
  • 19 facilitators across all campuses
  • 19 teachers
  • 16 assessment professionals
  • District support staff

Landry’s Seafood House now serving Gulf Coast cuisine in Hobby Airport

Landry’s Seafood House is now serving passengers near Gate 41 in William P. Hobby Airport, Houston Airport officials announced in a June 9 news release.

On the menu: The restaurant—which has both sit-down and bar seating—serves a variety of seafood options as well as steaks, sandwiches, salads, pasta and breakfast options, per the release. Guests can also enjoy a full bar with beer and cocktails.

Also of note: The new restaurant opening comes as the Houston area hosts the FIFA World Cup with an expected 4.5 million visitors across both Houston airports over the course of the tournament, Community Impact reported.

“Houston Airports is focused on creating a passenger experience that feels efficient, welcoming and distinctly Houston,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “Landry’s Seafood House gives Hobby Airport travelers a full-service dining option and a recognizable local connection as we prepare to welcome soccer fans from around the world.”

HCC to launch trade program with $17M investment from Bloomberg Philanthropies

Houston City College has received a $17 million investment from Bloomberg Philanthropies to launch Gulf Coast TradeUp Careers, a program aimed at providing free training in skilled trades and connecting students with paid apprenticeship opportunities.

At a glance: The program is a part of a new $90 million national effort from Bloomberg Philanthropies to change how high school students prepare for high-paying and skilled trades, officials said in a June 8 news release.

The program, which is spearheaded by the Gulf Coast Region Apprenticeship Hub, is intended to strengthen the area in:

  • Skilled trades workforce development
  • Registered apprenticeship expansion
  • Industry-driven career pathways
  • Earn-and-learn education models
  • Workforce innovation

The program is being developed with several partners including HCC, the Greater Houston Partnership, school districts in the Greater Houston area—including Houston and Alief ISDs—as well as several workforce organizations.

Looking ahead: The program, which is slated to begin in August, is set to serve 1,350 students over three years.
