Simply Mahj brings mahjong playing space to Katy

Simply Mahj, a mahjong playing space and retailer, has opened in Katy, owner Holly Patel confirmed.

The business centers around mahjong, a game with Chinese origins dating back to the 1800s, but it only began to take shape in the United States in the 1920s, according to the National Mah Jongg League. The rummy-like game is played with a group of people drawing and discarding tiles to form certain combinations.

What they offer: Simply Mahj offers classes, leagues, tournaments, retreats, private events and kid’s summer camps for anyone interested in playing or learning mahjong, Patel said. The business also sells their own line of tiles and accessories along with namebrands.
