Little Italy combines fine-dining techniques with home kitchen comfort

When husband-and-wife restaurateurs Christina Mojica and chef Alfredo Mojica opened Little Italy in Katy in late 2024, it was more than just another restaurant debut.

For the team behind Houston’s Amore Italian Restaurant, the concept marked the next step in bringing their signature blend of hospitality, tradition and family-centered dining to a new audience through an elevated yet approachable Italian experience.

The menu: The restaurant’s open kitchen is anchored by a gold-tiled wood-burning oven used to prepare all 12 varieties of pizza. The menu also highlights authentic Italian comfort food, including seafood and steak entrees. Other signature offerings include handmade pastas featuring slow-braised lamb or seafood.

Extra offerings: Beyond dinner service, Little Italy has expanded into an experience-driven destination. Weekend brunch features live music alongside dishes such as lobster and waffles with hot honey, lemon ricotta pancakes and focaccia eggs Benedict.

Guests can also participate in Handmade Pizza Classes led by chef Alfredo, where attendees learn dough preparation, sauce-making and wood-fired baking techniques.

Clothed by Faith expands Katy location to meet growing community needs

Local nonprofit Clothed by Faith held a ribbon-cutting ceremony May 13 to announce the expansion of its Katy location.

The details: Executive Director Deysi Crespo said the expansion stemmed from increasing donations as the community experiences “an exponential growth” of individuals and families who are in need of clothing.

“The community is very giving, it’s very loving and so we have experienced an influx of donations of clothing and therefore, the need to be able to sort clothing and prepare the bags that are going to those in need is actually what led to us needing additional space,” Crespo said.

$8.4B boost did not shield Texas schools from budget cuts, educators say

Nearly $8.4 billion in new state funding was not enough to save Texas public school districts from budget shortfalls and campus closures, school administrators said June 1.

What happened: During a 10-hour public hearing at the state Capitol, school district leaders spoke of efforts to stretch their budgets amid high inflationary costs as teachers explained their decisions to leave the classroom due to pay cuts and large class sizes.

The big picture: Last year, Texas lawmakers passed House Bill 2, a $8.4 billion school finance bill designed to increase educator salaries, create a new pot of money for fixed costs, provide more training for teachers and boost special education resources.

Roughly one year later, districts across Community Impact’s coverage areas are cutting staff and closing campuses, citing enrollment declines and budget shortfalls.

Quote of note: "This funding deficit is the final straw for me, and it will be for countless other educators across the state who must leave or who lose their jobs," Austin ISD French teacher Rachel Preston told lawmakers June 1.
