Friendswood ISD’s board of trustees reviewed two proposed options for the 2026-27 academic calendar at its Jan. 20 meeting but chose not to take action, opting instead for further discussion at a future workshop.

The District Advisory Committee, or DAC, recommended a revised “Option 2,” which moves fall break one week earlier than originally presented at a Dec. 8 meeting.

Following a recommendation from board President Tony Hopkins, trustees declined to approve the draft calendar at its Jan. 20 meeting.

What you need to know: For the approved 2025-26 academic year, fall break is scheduled for October 15-20. In the proposed 2026-27 calendar, those dates would be moved up to October 8-13.

Manvel’s strategic plan, or Manvel 2045, which was presented at City Council’s Jan. 20 meeting, was prepared by Houston-based Ron Cox Consulting and has recommendations for the city’s long-term growth and community priorities.

The details: The final report organizes city priorities around nine guiding principles, expanding on the eight originally adopted in February.

According to the National Weather Service, Winter Storm Fern is expected to move through the region starting Jan. 24 and bring freezing temperatures through Jan. 27. Officials with the NWS also noted wind chills will likely range from 5-15 degrees, which poses hypothermia and frostbite risks with prolonged exposure.

The update: Harris County and city of Houston officials announced 13 warming centers that will open Jan. 24, including:

• Metropolitan MSC: 1475 W. Gray St., Houston
• Moody Community Center: 3725 Fulton St., Houston
• Northeast MSC: 9720 Spaulding St., Houston
• Southwest MSC: 6400 High Star Drive, Houston
