Multiple candidates across Austin's five City Council races failed to meet deadlines for filing required financial disclosures this year.

The details: Candidates seeking office in the November 2026 contests were required to submit financial statements by late August and early September. Missed filings are violations of local and state ethics rules that can be punishable as misdemeanor offenses.

What happened: After being contacted about missed filings, several candidates said they'd be submitting their forms or already had.

What else: Separately, the Ethics Review Commission voted unanimously to begin sending reminders to all City Council candidates about campaign deadlines to help increase future compliance.

Komé, owned by husband-and-wife duo Takehiro and Kayo Asazu, is commemorating 15 years of operations this fall.

“Austin has given us so much support over the years, and we feel very lucky to still be able to cook and serve the food we love after 15 years,” Takehiro and Kayo Asazu shared in a statement to Community Impact.

The setup: Takehiro and Kayo Asazu initially opened the restaurant in October 2011. The pair hoped to open a casual neighborhood restaurant where patrons could enjoy dishes that they grew up eating in Japan.

The couple wanted Komé to offer more than sushi, and instead have a menu filled with common Japanese dishes, sushi and izakaya-style food, according to Kayo Asazu.

On the menu: Customers can order sushi, nigiri, noodle dishes and rice-based bowls.

Austin Community College trustees unanimously approved a tax rate of $0.103643 per $100 of valuation, up from $0.1034 last year. Because property values fell, the average bill will drop about 2.2%, and the average homestead bill will drop about 1%. The owner of an average home will pay about $557, down from $562 last year.

The details: The new rate is below the college's no-new-revenue rate, meaning it will collect less from existing property. District officials said the slight rate increase is tied to debt on a $770 million bond voters approved in 2022. Property taxes fund about 67% of the college's $583 million budget.

What's next: Tax bills typically go out in the fall. They are due Feb. 1, 2027, because Jan. 31 falls on a Sunday.
