Austin, UT announce deal to preserve Muny

The city of Austin and The University of Texas at Austin announced a path toward a deal to preserve the historic Lions Municipal Golf Course, also known as Muny.

The details: Backed by significant anonymous donations, the agreement would maintain Muny as an 18-hole golf course and convey the property to the city. The adjacent West Austin Youth Association campus would also transfer to the recreation nonprofit.

To complete the transaction:

  • City officials will update the Brackenridge Development Agreement controlling university-owned land along Lake Austin Boulevard

  • Austin will turn over some rights-of-way on UT's campuses to university oversight

  • A university ground lease in Mueller would be updated to allow for future housing development

  • City Council and UT's Board of Regents must approve a final agreement

What's next: After public review in the coming weeks, changes to the Brackenridge agreement will go to City Council for a vote mid-November. Broader planning and financing measures required to finalize the deal are expected to be up for approval in the spring.

Q&A: Weather forecaster James Greenhaw explains effects of El Niño in Central Texas

Central Texas could experience increased moisture and slightly cooler temperatures as El Niño lingers through the fall and winter, Pflugerville weather forecaster James Greenhaw said in an interview with Community Impact.

According to a report from NOAA, there is an 83% chance that this will be the strongest El Niño on record. Greenhaw, who's known as the "Pflugerville Weather Guy" for sharing updates on social media, explained the effects this natural climate pattern could have on the area.

What is El Niño?

The description is hard to exactly say, but it's basically the warming of the Pacific waters west of Central America.

How will El Niño affect Central Texas weather?

In a typical El Niño year, what that does is it brings in more moisture towards the United States, especially toward Texas.

What’s the timeline of El Niño?

December through I would say March [or] April months are going to be our highest chances to see an increased rainfall. Not necessarily flooding, but it can happen.
