Richardson commission OKs new child care academy

Willowbrae Childcare Academy could soon take over an empty building on Coit Road after the Richardson City Plan Commission unanimously recommended approval for a special-use permit in a Dec. 2 meeting.

The details: According to city documents, following City Council approval, the child care center plans to sign a 10-year initial lease term at 500 N. Coit Road.

The facility would serve children from infancy to 6 years old, with a maximum enrollment of 220 students.

What they're saying: Elise Dougherty, a resident who said she was one of the closest neighbors to the site, voiced her opposition to the child care center at the meeting and expressed concerns that drop-off and pick-up queues would add to traffic and block access to nearby businesses.

Senior planner Derica Peters said city staff worked with Willowbrae to produce a traffic circulation plan that will ensure parents are redirected from the nearby neighborhood during peak times.
