Argyle ISD opens discussion on new feeder system for schools

Argyle ISD’s board of trustees discussed a new potential feeder system to mitigate district growth at a regular meeting March 23.

In a nutshell: Argyle ISD officials had a long-range planning discussion about its growing student population in the future.

The district is examining its current grade spans and feeder patterns, according to district documents.

“We’re looking to balance growth and sustainability,” AISD Superintendent Courtney Carpenter said. “That’s what’s really driven this entire study. One that meets student needs now and then not create as many challenges 15 [to] 20 years down the road.”

Diving deeper: The new Legacy High School, expected to open in fall 2027, is projected to be over capacity by the 2030-31 school year, according to district data. Carpenter said the district is also seeing significant seat availability in the elementary schools starting in the 2027-28 school year.

Looking ahead: The board will have another discussion about the new feeder system and rezoning at a special board meeting and budget workshop April 8.

Gideon Math and Reading Center now offers tutoring for students around Argyle

Gideon Math and Reading Center started seeing students in Argyle for tutoring sessions earlier this March.

What they offer: The tutoring center helps students in grades K-12 with mathematics and English, owner Neha Mehrotra said. The school can aid students from any independent school district, including Denton ISD, Northwest ISD and Argyle ISD.

“We do a lot of one-on-one [sessions],” she said. “It’s a big focus for us because younger students tend to thrive in group settings and older ones tend to thrive in one-on-ones.”

There are programs for autistic children with either one-on-one tutoring or a small group setting, Mehrotra said.

The school also helps with Advanced Placement Physics and AP Chemistry, she said.

Texas to prohibit purchases of candy, sugary drinks with SNAP benefits

Beginning April 1, Texans can no longer use food stamps to purchase sweetened beverages and candy.

How we got here: During the 2025 legislative session, Texas lawmakers passed Senate Bill 379, which prohibits Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits from being used to purchase candy and sweetened drinks. In August, the federal government approved a waiver allowing Texas to implement the prohibition beginning April 1.

Texas will be the ninth state to prohibit SNAP benefits from being used on sugary items, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

How it works: Under SB 379, Texans will not be allowed to use their SNAP benefits to buy sweetened drinks containing any artificial sweeteners or at least 5 grams of added sugar, according to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. SB 379 also bans the purchase of candy with Lone Star Cards.

It is up to Texas businesses to determine which items are no longer SNAP-eligible, update their store purchase systems and train staff to recognize the newly restricted items, according to the HHSC.
