Plano City Council to consider tax election for Stars arena after approved traffic study

Plano City Council will vote to consider a special election for taxes to be implemented into the Dallas Stars arena planned at The Shops at Willow Bend at a meeting Aug. 10.

The council also approved a preliminary traffic study for the Willow Bend area at a meeting July 27.

The gist: Plano officials will consider a special election for residents to vote for tax options to be implemented to help finance the Stars arena, per city documents: 

  • Short-term motor vehicle rental tax not to exceed 5%
  • Short-term hotel occupancy tax not to exceed 2% of the room price
  • Event parking tax not to exceed $3 per vehicle
  • Admissions tax not to exceed 10% of each ticket price
  • Venue facility use tax not to exceed $5,000 per game on each member of a major league team that plays a professional sports game at the venue

Also of note: Plano City Council awarded $320,000 to Fehr & Peers to conduct a traffic study for preliminary considerations on the Stars arena.

Texas to pause new data center projects until audit is conducted, Gov. Abbott says

Texas is halting the approval of new data center projects until state regulators can audit all data centers seeking to connect to the power grid, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Aug. 3.

The overview: The governor directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to conduct “a comprehensive verification and audit” of all data center applicants “before any additional data centers are approved to move forward.” 

Data center regulation has emerged as a bipartisan issue in recent months, and the move comes amid both growing public criticism of Texas’ booming data center industry and recent political pressure for Abbott to respond.

Zooming in: Abbott asked the PUC and ERCOT to collect information about the tax exemptions each data center is collecting; details about each project's anticipated water and electricity usage; and how data center developers will work to limit noise, light pollution and other impacts on local communities.

Officials did not say how long the pause would last or when the audits would begin.
