Drivers and businesses along Tamina Road will see continued construction along the corridor until the end of the year, when work is expected to be substantially completed, Westwood Magnolia Parkway Improvement District confirmed in a Sept. 23 update on the project. However, business owners have said they’ve experienced power and other utility outages as a result of the work being done.

Some context: The $7 million-$10 million construction project began in 2023 to improve mobility, safety and aesthetics on Tamina Road, a connector between FM 1488 and FM 2978, according to previous Community Impact reporting. Improvements to Tamina Road will include adding pedestrian walkways to provide easier and safer access to businesses along Tamina Road and adding left-turn lanes.

More details: WMPID officials said the organization will continue to coordinate with the utility owners to reduce disruptions and keep the road project moving. Eissler said while contractors should be aware of disruptions, businesses can reach out to WMPID with concerns.

Veteran- and woman-owned business Patriot Paws Mobile Imaging is now serving Montgomery County and parts of Harris County, officials said.

Meet the owners: Owned by Porter residents Katie and Jason Blanco, who are members of the VFW and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, the business opened in May and launched as a mobile business to local veterinarians in August.

Quote of note: “We started Patriot Paws Mobile Imaging after seeing how challenging it can be for hospitals to get timely ultrasounds scheduled, sometimes waiting weeks, which can delay treatment and add unnecessary stress for both doctors and clients and their pets,” Katie Blanco said.

Harris County commissioners will meet Oct. 16 with more than 500 agenda items on the docket, including potential discussions on the countywide hiring freeze, the broadband task force and regulations on panhandling and roadside vending in unincorporated Harris County.

What you need to know: In the first meeting since Harris County commissioners adopted the $2.7 billion fiscal year 2025-26 budget Sept. 26, county administration officials will request to discuss hiring freeze exemptions.

Also on the agenda: Updates with the county’s broadband task force are also slated for discussion. Commissioners adopted the creation of the task force in late June that aims to target internet access inequity throughout the county.

Also of note: Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey has an agenda item to create regulations on panhandling and roadside vending in unincorporated Harris County. Ramsey’s discussion item comes as House Bill 2012, which was passed during the last state legislative session and allows counties to enforce regulations against roadside vendors, takes effect.

The Texas House and Senate are launching new legislative committees to “get to the bottom of exactly what occurred” during this summer’s deadly Central Texas floods, state leaders announced Oct. 13.

The details: The bipartisan panels, known as the House and Senate General Investigating Committees on the July 2025 Flooding Events, will meet jointly to conduct “a comprehensive and thorough review” of the floods, House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said.

Lawmakers will be tasked with:

• Identifying strategies to strengthen Texas’ disaster preparedness
• Helping communities respond to future floods
• Examining actions taken at summer camps in the flood zone
