After six months of assessing facility needs, West University Place City Council selected plans Sept. 28 to construct a new police station along Amherst Street and renovate the existing municipal building to host both City Hall and fire operations.

The gist: The motion to choose the construction and expansion plans passed in a 3-2 vote, with council members Kalie Rainsberger and Clay Brett being the only ones to oppose them.

West U’s municipal building, located at 3800 University Blvd., currently serves as the base for all public safety departments and City Hall functions

The features: The selected plan, referred to as ‘Option A.1’ in the meeting presentation, outlines the relocation of the police station to 3826 Amherst St., which is currently occupied by the public works administration and facilities maintenance division.

The proposed 2-story police department facility will span approximately 24,640 square feet, while the renovated municipal building will measure approximately 42,540 square feet. The estimated overall square footage for both properties combined is 67,180, according to agenda documents.

Meet the chef: The new modern Mediterranean concept is overseen by executive chef Ibrahim Alsharif, whose culinary career includes work in Dubai, Jordan, Kuwait and Boston.

On the menu: The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner menus featuring classic and Mediterranean-style dishes. The dinner menu includes several specialty dishes such as Lamb Chops Royale, Salt & Sea Branzino, Charcoal Beef Skewers and Chicken Massimo.

Quote of note: Chef Ibrahim said the menu is rooted in "generosity, connection and the joy of sharing a meal."

"Food is about more than ingredients," he said in an Instagram post. "It's about hospitality, family and shared experiences."

District C council member Joe Panzarella shared the results of a survey from his 100-Day Town Hall, which asked residents how they want district dollars spent. The survey received over 1,000 responses, exceeding the expected 200 to 300 responses.

The results: According to the survey, the top priorities and challenges for District C residents include walkability improvements, street upgrades, sidewalks that are missing or in disrepair and unsafe streets and deteriorating streets.

One more thing: Additionally, over 35% of participants reported that they do not feel connected to the District C office at all.

Two candidates are running for Harris County Treasurer in the upcoming election. The candidates on the ballot are Marc Cowart and incumbent Carla L. Wyatt.

Key details for voters include:

• Early voting begins Oct. 19 and runs through Oct. 30.
• Election day is Nov. 3, with polls open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
• Registered voters are permitted to cast their ballot at any polling location during both early voting and on election day.

Heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding will threaten large parts of Texas this week, Gov. Greg Abbott told reporters Sept. 28.

The overview: The governor pointed to severe flooding that occurred in South-Central Texas in mid-July, damaging property, sweeping cars off roadways and killing two people. This week's storms will impact "a far more vast portion of the state" than the July flooding, he warned.

The details: Abbott said heavy rains will "really dramatically affect" the majority of the state on Sept. 30, and the National Weather Service noted that "North-Central Texas is a particular concern."

"We don't have the information needed right now to advise Texans on exactly what's going to happen in our rivers," Abbott told reporters. "I can tell you this, however: Everyone should expect the rivers to rise."
