First Street widening:
First Street will be widened from a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane divided suburban roadway between Dallas North Tollway and Coleman Street. The project includes concrete curb and gutter roadway, underground drainage improvements, and water line. 

Ongoing projects

Choate Parkway widening:
Choate Parkway will be reconstructed from a two-lane roadway to a six-lane divided roadway from Coit Road to Roseland Parkway. The project is shared between the city and the adjacent subdivision developer.

Firm Foundation Dental is now open, owner Dr. Mark Polle confirmed.

What’s special about it: Firm Foundation Dental is a faith-based practice, Polle said. Its name comes from a Christian hymn, “How Firm a Foundation,” according to the business’s website.

Medical City announces blood drives across Dallas-Fort Worth amid blood shortage

Medical City facilities across Dallas-Fort Worth will host blood drives in February and March to continue to bring aid to the region, according to a news release.

The details: Severe winter weather at the end of January has created a significant need for blood donations in North Texas after forcing many donor centers and blood drives to close for several days, according to previous reporting.

The winter months are already a slow time for blood donor turnout, which is why Medical City officials are asking for eligible donors to consider donating at one of these drives.

Q&A: Meet the Democratic primary candidates running for Texas land commissioner

Two Democratic candidates are running to lead the Texas General Land Office in the upcoming March 3 primary election.

The big picture: Benjamin Flores and Jose Loya are vying for the Democratic nomination for Texas land commissioner. The winning Democratic candidate will face Republican incumbent Dawn Buckingham in November, and the winner of that election will begin serving as land commissioner in January 2027.

Buckingham, who is seeking a second four-year term as land commissioner, is running uncontested in the Republican primary. Community Impact runs candidate Q&As for contested races only.

The context: The General Land Office manages 13 million acres of state lands, with duties such as allocating disaster recovery funds, leasing state lands to generate revenue for the state's Permanent School Fund, preserving state landmarks such as the Alamo and overseeing several veterans programs. Two Republican candidates are running to lead the Texas Department of Agriculture in the upcoming March 3 primary election.

The overview: Nate Sheets is challenging incumbent Sid Miller, who is seeking a fourth term as Texas agriculture commissioner. The winning Republican candidate will face Democrat Clayton Tucker in November, and the winner of that election will be sworn in for a four-year term in January 2027.

Real estate, networking and prizes: Community Impact's InCIder Hour heading to DFW on Feb. 17

The overview: As Community Impact enters its third decade, it’s returning to its roots of growth and deeper reader connections. The “Patron” program, which began in 2020 by reader demand, has relaunched as InCIder.

“This relaunch represents our renewed commitment to readers who support our local news,” CEO John Garrett said. “Beyond funding great journalism, we also want to reward our InCIders and build deeper connections with them, creating a true sense of community around the work we do.”

Event details: As part of the new program, Community Impact is hosting InCIder Hours across the state, events designed to celebrate and engage the company’s top supporters.

DFW’s first InCIder Hour will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Feb. 17 at Community Impact’s DFW headquarters, 3803 Parkwood Blvd., Ste. 500, Frisco.
