Pflugerville to 'beautify' Historic Colored Addition

Pflugerville City Council passed a resolution approving the Historic Colored Addition Beautification Plan at their meeting May 26.

The background: The Historic Colored Addition Beautification Plan outlines a three- to five-year effort to honor and preserve one of Pflugerville’s earliest historically Black neighborhoods.

Founded in 1910, the area developed through the efforts of families who established St. Mary’s Baptist Church, St. Matthew’s Missionary Church, a community cemetery and an elementary school that served local children until desegregation in 1965.

Next steps: Implementation will occur in phases in partnership with the Equity Advisory Board and the community, with funding considered in future budget cycles. The Equity Advisory Board unanimously approved the Historic Colored Addition Beautification Plan on May 11.

“I know there are some people who have questioned why we have an equity commission. This is why,” Place 4 City Council member Rudy Metayer said.

Fells Hardwood Supply brings hands-on expertise to Central Texas woodworkers

Fells Hardwood Supply started as a side project in Jamie and David Fells’ garage, and has grown into a business aimed at filling a gap in the Central Texas woodworking community.

The backstory: The couple launched Fells Hardwood after realizing many local lumber suppliers lacked hands-on woodworking knowledge. Now, from their new Hutto storefront, they’re helping hobbyists and professionals find quality materials, custom pieces and in-person woodworking education.

Jamie and David Fells both work full time jobs, and started Fells Hardwood with the goal to make woodworking more accessible to people in the area.

“We learned very quickly that in Central Texas, in general, there was not a lot of businesses that had employees that were woodworkers,” Jamie said. “So there was a void in knowledge for people who were selling.”

What they offer: Jamie said they offer a lot of exotic woods, and this is a highlight for several customers. Exotics are anything not grown in the U.S., and Fells Hardwood’s specialty is canarywood.
