Check out 3 recent changes to the Allen Land Development Code

Updates to the Allen Land Development Code include changes related to manufactured homes and food trucks.

Allen City Council approved an update to the city’s land development code to comply with two legislative bills at a July 28 meeting.

Diving deeper: The Allen Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of these changes at its July 7 meeting. The ALDC is amended a few times each year due to policy changes, new legislative bills and to correct minor errors, Senior Planner Nabiha Ahmed said. The first change is proposed to comply with Senate Bill 785 which was passed by the 89th Texas Legislature in 2025.

The Melting Pot sets opening date for Allen restaurant

An Allen location of The Melting Pot is set to open in August, a representative of the business confirmed.

On the menu: The eatery, which will be located in Watters Creek Village, will offer a signature four-course dining experience featuring both cheese and chocolate fondue courses.

The menu includes six types of cheese fondue served with bread, fruits and vegetables, and entree fondue options including Coq au Vin, Court Bouillon and more, which pair with proteins including shrimp, steak, chicken and more. Dessert options include six types of chocolate fondue served with sweet treats and fresh fruits, the restaurant’s website states.

85K students will use new Texas Education Freedom Accounts this school year

At least 85,000 students will use Texas' new education savings accounts during the 2026-27 school year, an Aug. 3 report shows. Enrollment may grow as the school year kicks off and more families opt in to the program.

The overview: The Texas Education Freedom Accounts program gives families state funds to send their children to private schools or homeschool them, with priority going to students with disabilities and children from low-income households.

About 24% of students participating in the TEFA program have a disability, according to state data, and 80% of participants are from low-income families.

Zooming in: The largest numbers of students participating in the program live in Texas’ largest school districts, data shows. The report lists that 3,327 participants live in Houston ISD’s boundaries, followed by 2,645 participants from Dallas ISD, 2,271 participants from Northside ISD and 2,024 participants from Fort Bend ISD.

Previous state data showed that about 43% of students selected for the program had previously attended a Texas public school, although the Aug. 3 report did not include that information.
