WilCo marks construction milestone for Juvenile Justice Center

Williamson County celebrated completing the highest point of construction on its Juvenile Justice Center addition and expansion project with a topping out ceremony July 10.

About the project: The county broke ground on the project in early 2025 to add 48 new beds, a regional family services courtroom, learning and exercise areas, a control room, and larger intake and release areas. The facility is located at 200 Wilco Way, Georgetown.

The $90 million project is expected to be complete in early 2027, according to a county news release.

The why: The facility houses youth who have entered the justice system in Williamson County. According to the release, the expansion will further the county’s goal of treating the individual rather than the crime to reduce recidivism.

Additionally, the new building and renovation of the current facility will help address an increase in more serious offenses and complex cases, and meet the county’s needs for the next 25-30 years, the release states.

Austin public safety departments report overtime spending overruns

New reporting from Austin's public safety departments shows their overtime costs are far exceeding departments' current allocations.

The details: Austin Fire, the Austin Police Department and Austin/Travis County Emergency Medical Services make up the majority of the city general fund, the portion of Austin's overall $6.3 billion budget covering most public facing services. Almost two-thirds of the $1.49 billion general fund is reserved for public safety in the current fiscal year 2025-26.

Last year, City Council voted to require public reporting of the three departments' overtime costs to help inform future budgeting decisions. That information is now available through monthly reporting accessible online.

What else: Spending activity reported through this spring shows APD and Austin Fire are well beyond their overtime budgets this year, while the EMS department several million dollars below its limit. As of the spring, the police department had nearly reached its fiscal year overtime allocation and the fire department already used over a third more than it has available.

What to know about the state response to heavy rainfall, flash flooding across Texas

As heavy rain and flash flooding threatens large swaths of South and Central Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott spoke to reporters about the state's preparation for and response to the severe weather July 15.

The big picture: The heaviest rainfall is occurring in southwest Texas, according to the National Weather Service, with 10-15 inches of rain expected through July 16 along the U.S. 90 corridor west of San Antonio. As of 2:40 p.m. July 15, all or parts of 14 counties were under a flash flood warning, including Comal, Hays and Bexar counties.

The city of New Braunfels announced several road closures July 15, and the city closed recreational access to the Comal River due to continued rainfall and rising water levels, Community Impact reported.

The severe weather came just over a year after historic flooding killed more than 130 people in Central Texas on July 4-5, 2025.

More details: Dozens of other counties were under flood watches, advisories and warnings. Fifty-nine counties were also under a state disaster declaration as of July 14.
