Shipley Do-Nuts to build new location in New Caney

Shipley Do-Nuts has plans to begin construction Aug. 31 on a new location in the New Caney area, per an Aug. 18 TDLR filing.

The details: With plans to be completed by Oct. 12, the 1,750-square-foot building will cost $1.25 million and is privately funded.

Shipley Do-Nuts is a Houston-based doughnut shop franchise that offers more than 60 doughnut flavors including glazed, iced, filled and sprinkle-topped options. The bakery also offers kolaches, doughnut holes, hot and iced coffee, and specialty rolls, such as apple fritters, bear claws and cinnamon rolls.

Old Houston Road widening project to kick off soon in New Caney

A $7.25 million construction project focused on widening part of Old Houston Road from two to four lanes is scheduled to begin Aug. 31, according to Precinct 4 Commissioner Matt Gray’s Office.

What residents should know: Work to expand the roadway will take place over the next year, starting where Old Houston Road intersects with Hwy. 242 in New Caney and ending 0.8 miles south of the intersection, said Kennedy Williams, a community outreach staffer with Gray’s Office, via email Aug. 26.

Other work that will be completed under the project includes the addition of:

  • A continuous turn lane 
  • A new bridge over Dry Creek
  • Roadside ditches 

Some context: The project is just the first segment of a three-phase project that will widen Old Houston Road from two to four lanes between Hwy. 242 and FM 1314. Williams previously said field work for Segments 2 and 3 is underway.

Houston Audubon renamed Birds Houston

The Houston Audubon Society, founded in 1969, has renamed itself Birds of Houston as part of a broader effort to clarify its mission and modernize its identity, according to a release from the organization. The organization also unveiled a new logo featuring the Yellow-throated Warbler, a longtime symbol tied to its conservation history.

What you need to know: The name change is intended to make the organization’s work more immediately clear, including protecting birds and their habitats, conserving critical land, providing education and nature experiences and advocating for conservation policies, the release states.

Also of note: The new name comes ahead of the eighth annual Houston Bird Week, scheduled for Sept. 19-26, with registration opening Sept. 1 for events across the Greater Houston area.

Q&A: Get to know 3 candidates for Texas Railroad Commissioner

Texas voters will choose from Republican Bo French, Libertarian Arthur DiBianca and Democrat Jon Rosenthal in this November's Texas Railroad Commission race.

The details: The winner of the race will be sworn in to replace incumbent Commissioner Jim Wright in January.

French beat Wright in a May Republican primary runoff, advancing to the general election. Rosenthal ran uncontested in the March Democratic primary, while DiBianca was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Did you know? The three-member railroad commission does not have any jurisdiction over the state's railroads—that authority was transferred to the Texas Department of Transportation and the federal government by 2005, according to the commission's website. Instead, the agency regulates Texas' oil and gas industries.

Looking ahead: Early voting in dozens of local and state races runs from Oct. 19-30, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
