Brazos County receives primary election results following recount

Brazos County commissioners formally received results from the March primary election at their April 21 meeting, after a recount confirmed no changes to outcomes.

What you need to know: County Elections Administrator Trudy Hancock reported 32,143 ballots were cast. The Republican primary recorded 18,057 votes, while the Democratic primary saw 14,086 ballots cast.

Some context: A recount in the Precinct 2 commissioner race required officials to review ballots from 30 precincts, including early voting, election day locations and mail-in ballots. Hancock said her team counted 7,117 ballots during the process, which required 110 staff hours and resulted in no change.

Offering input: Hancock also addressed public complaints about alleged "ghost voters," telling commissioners her office follows strict state procedures for maintaining voter rolls and has not received documentation supporting those claims.

Bryan ISD prepares for school bus seat belt mandate, submits funding report

Bryan ISD officials are preparing for a statewide school bus safety requirement that will enforce major upgrades to the district’s fleet over the next few years.

What you need to know: During its April 20 meeting, Bryan ISD’s board of trustees unanimously approved required reporting related to Senate Bill 546, which was passed during Texas’ 89th Legislative session and mandates three-point seat belts on all school buses by Sept. 1, 2029.

Deputy Superintendent Brian Merrell described the requirement as an “unfunded mandate,” meaning districts must comply even though dedicated state funding has not yet been guaranteed.

The breakdown: Bryan ISD Director of Transportation Bryant Washington said the district plans a phased approach to combine bus replacement and retrofittings.

The transportation department estimates:

  • $4.8 million to buy 39 new buses over the next three years
  • $900,000 to retrofit 30 existing buses

Funding the project: Bryan ISD will submit a report to the state in hopes of receiving some financial assistance. Otherwise, the district's 2025 bond will have to fund these upgrades.
