On July 21, the Kyle City Council allocated $294,137 in Community Development Block Grant, or CDBG, funding to sidewalk improvement projects.

What happened: The city received $294,137 in CDBG funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD. The grant funding will be used on community projects in areas identified as low-to-moderate-income per HUD guidelines, according to agenda documents.

The approved funding allocation will go toward the construction of sidewalks, Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, compliant curb ramps and related pedestrian improvements in the city, according to agenda documents.

While specific project locations have not yet been identified, city staff anticipate the funding will serve around 133 residential lots, according to agenda documents.

Looking forward: City staff will work to identify specific project locations now that the council has approved the funding allocation. Selected projects must meet all HUD eligibility requirements.

East Main Street expansion
Update: The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, or CAMPO, awarded the project $10.5 million in federal funding.

West Goforth Road reconstruction
Update: The Buda City Council approved a recommendation to only construct the western portion of the roadway, from approximately Bonita Vista Drive to South Loop 4. Remaining allocated funds for the project will be applied to transportation projects on Old Black Colony Road and Austin Street.

Middle Creek Drive rehabilitation
Update: Substantial completion on the project was reached in mid-August, and final asphalt paving has begun.

Cole Springs Road bridge
Update: The bridge was completed and opened to traffic July 17. A ribbon-cutting launched the roadway alongside the Colony at Cole Springs master-planned community.

Austin Light Rail vehicle design to advance under $39M contract with Stadler: Switzerland-based Stadler has been selected to deliver the train cars for Austin Light Rail, the third and final major vendor brought on for the project's first stages this year. Officials with the Austin Transit Partnership advanced a $39 million contract with Stadler to design the fully electric vehicles July 15.

New bridge over Onion Creek opens in Buda, increasing city access: The bridge will provide community members and first responders a faster route to travel in the city, connecting Cole Springs Road with FM 2770.
