Friendswood ISD board of trustees seats set, November election canceled

Friendswood ISD will not hold an election for its board of trustees this November after all three positions up for election went unopposed.

What you need to know: Beau Egert, who currently holds Position 5, and David Montz, who holds Position 7, will each be reinstated for another three-year term.

Ralph Hobratschk, who currently holds Position 6, is not seeking reelection. Robert Kirkpatrick was the only candidate to file for the position and will serve a three-year term after Hobratschk’s term ends in November.

FISD therapeutic education center receives $115K grant

The Friendswood ISD Education Foundation, or FEF, awarded a $115,000 legacy grant to the district’s Therapeutic Education Center to provide students with a new outdoor learning and wellness space, according to an Aug. 12 news release from the district.

What you need to know: The TEC operates inside the district’s annex building, located at 402 Laurel Drive, and is a partnership between Friendswood, Alvin and Pearland ISDs serving students with autism, low-incidence disabilities and emotional disabilities, according to the release.

Diving in deeper: The grant was awarded Aug. 10 through The U Foundation, which was founded and is led by Friendswood resident Mirna Herr. Funding for the grant came through the FEF’s Endowment Fund and Century Club, along with contributions from individuals, families and organizations, the release states.

Live updates: ERCOT will complete data center audit in late 2026, officials say

The Texas House State Affairs Committee heard from power grid officials; data center developers and industry representatives; local government officials; cybersecurity experts; and utility companies during an Aug. 19 hearing on the growth of data centers in the state. Dozens of Texas residents also testified about the impact of data centers in their communities.

The details: Pablo Vegas, CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, said it will take the grid operator several months to audit about 200 gigawatts of data center proposals. ERCOT will request information from all large and medium-sized data centers that are expected to use at least 25 megawatts of electricity.

ERCOT and the Public Utility Commission were ordered on Aug. 3 to audit all data centers seeking to connect to Texas’ power grid. They anticipate completing that audit in late November or early December, Vegas said.
