McKinney council to discuss SH 5 crossing at upcoming work session

City staff is scheduled to update McKinney City Council members on proposed improvements along the State Highway 5 corridor at an upcoming work session in July.

The overview: Plans are underway to reconstruct and widen SH 5 as a divided four-lane road between McMakin Street and Power House Street, according to a city document. Design is underway, and the Texas Department of Transportation is expected to start construction in late 2027 or early 2028.

As part of that project, the city is contributing funding for additional enhancements along the corridor, such as median-mounted roadway lighting and turn lanes. The city is also planning an enhanced at-grade crossing between East Virginia Street and East Louisiana Street.

City staff is making the presentation to receive direction from council members as they continue to coordinate with TxDOT and the North Central Texas Council of Governments to incorporate improvements along the corridor.

Stay tuned: McKinney City Council will meet for a work session and regular meeting July 7 at McKinney City Hall, located at 401 E. Virginia St.

Prestwick Family Eyecare is now open near the intersection of Prestwick Hollow Drive and University Drive in McKinney.

The specifics: The independent, private eye care practice is led by founder Dr. Amber Paulsen. According to its website, the practice offers comprehensive eye care and exams as well as contact lens evaluations, myopia management and more.

Quote of note: “We offer high quality eyewear products and utilize state-of-the-art equipment to provide our patients with their best vision,” Paulsen said in an email.

1. Allen police chief shares update on city's automated license plate reader program

The Allen Police Department uses automated license plate readers, or ALPRs, as a tool to enhance public safety, according to Police Chief Steve Dye. The readers can support patrol operations and assist in criminal operations by identifying vehicles associated with outstanding warrants, criminal investigations, Amber Alerts and other law enforcement purposes.

2. Aveda closes Stonebriar Centre location in Frisco

Aveda offered health and beauty services and body care. It offered products for hair, skin and more. Aveda products will still be available online.

Don Huffines appointed as Texas comptroller

Former state Sen. Don Huffines was appointed as the Texas comptroller of public accounts, Gov. Greg Abbott announced July 2.

Huffines, a Dallas-area native with a bachelor's degree in business administration in finance from The University of Texas at Austin, will take over as the state's finance and budgeting officer from acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock. Huffines will officially begin his service Aug. 1.

Huffines defeated Hancock, who became acting comptroller one year ago, in the March Republican primary. He'll now face former state Sen. Sarah Eckhardt in the November general election for a four-year term.
