Celina council approves $70.3M for downtown water treatment facility

Celina officials are moving forward with an expansion of the Downtown Water Reclamation Facility that will more than triple the plant’s processing capacity, according to the city’s five-year capital improvement program.

The impact: The Downtown WRF is rated to process 0.95 million gallons of wastewater per day, per the city’s five-year CIP. Once the improvements are complete, the plant will be able to handle 3 mgd, according to a report by city staff.

Zooming out: Expanding the Downtown WRF is part of a larger effort to expand Celina’s wastewater treatment capacity as the city’s population expands.

Looking ahead: Construction is scheduled to start this fall and wrap up in the second quarter of 2029.

Lightbridge Academy daycare moves forward in Celina

A new daycare could be coming soon to Celina.

The gist: Lightbridge Academy, a daycare and early childhood education center, plans to open a new location on roughly two acres of land near the intersection of Legacy Drive and Frontier Parkway, according to a report by city staff.

Learn more: Lightbridge Academy offers programs for children ages six weeks to five years, according to the company’s website.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines celebrates 55th anniversary

Southwest Airlines celebrates the 55th anniversary of its first flight on June 18.
The Dallas-based airline’s first revenue flight departed from Dallas Love Field on June 18, 1971, bound for San Antonio, according to the company’s website.

The background: The company was founded by Herb Kelleher, filing with the state of Texas to establish Air Southwest Co. on March 9, 1967. A legal battle followed until the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Kelleher and Rollin King in December of 1970 to clear the way to start operations. The company changed its name to Southwest Airlines Co. on March 29, 1971.
Initially, the company only flew routes within Texas, but now has 52 destinations listed from Dallas Love Field. According to the website, Southwest now operates out of 121 airports across 12 countries.

What else? Southwest Airlines had more than 134 million customers in 2025, according to its website.

Maman Coffee, Bakery, Kitchen to offer pastries, sandwiches in Plano

A new bakery and kitchen, Maman, will be opening its third location in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Plano.

Maman is a New York-based restaurant that offers breakfast and lunch options like overnight oats, omelette, salads, soups and sandwiches. Some of its drinks include seasonal lattes, tea, lemonade and fizz drinks. Maman also offers traditional coffee options like espresso shots, americanos and a cortado.

Maman will be located at the former Main Street Bistro and Bakery. Maman’s other two locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are in Dallas.

Soul food restaurant Trucker’s Cafe to reopen Richardson location

Trucker’s Cafe is set to reopen its Richardson location on Aug. 1, owner Paulette Johnson said.

Trucker’s Cafe is a soul food restaurant serving salads, burgers, fish, chicken, meatloaf and more. The restaurant, which first opened in Richardson in 2020, has been closed for a year due to a fire, Johnson said.

Johnson said the grand opening will offer a $6.99 special with meat and sides.
