After hours of public debate, Round Rock council approves data center zoning

Round Rock City Council unanimously approved a rezoning request that will allow a Skybox data center to be built near East Old Settlers Boulevard and North A.W. Grimes Boulevard.

Some context: The property has been zoned light industrial since 2023, but has remained undeveloped.

Because “data center” is not a defined use in Round Rock’s zoning code, the developer was required to seek approval through a planned unit development, or PUD, to allow the use and establish customized requirements.

Planning and Development Services Director Brad Dushkin said one existing Round Rock data center generates property tax revenue equivalent to about 600 single-family homes while occupying a footprint similar to about 100 homes.

Those opposed: Public comment stretched for hours, with more than a dozen speakers largely echoing similar concerns about noise, electric demand, air quality and long-term impacts to surrounding neighborhoods.

Joshua Phillips, who said he organized a petition after the Dec. 4 hearing, told council members he collected more than 3,000 signatures opposing the rezoning.

WilCo historic jail site sold to hospitality developer

Delightful Development purchased the Williamson County historic jail site Feb. 10, following approval from county commissioners.

The details: Delightful Development co-founder Craig Cavallier told county commissioners the team doesn’t have a specific plan for the site yet but expects to incorporate a restaurant and hotel in a mixed-use development. The design will include the historic jail building, Cavallier said.

The developer will work with the city of Georgetown to develop the site following the sale, County Judge Steve Snell said.

Some context: In November 2024, Williamson County began deconstructing the nonhistoric additions near the jail site at 102 W. Third St., and stripping the jail interior in order to repurpose the site and sell it.

Georgetown City Council approved a rezoning request from the county Jan. 27, allowing for the following uses:

  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Single-family residential
  • Parking lots
  • Personal services
  • Banking or financial services
